THE VALENCIAN BAROQUE GEM
Walking past the entrance to the Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas is akin to travelling back in time to an age of nobles and bourgeoisie, ostentation and art.
Thanks to this building’s excellent state of conservation and its museum, it is much easier to daydream and relive times gone by. The ornamental entrance in alabaster and marble constitutes a spectacular introduction; impossibly lifelike sculptures occupy most of the façade.
Once inside, you can stroll among the treasures and beauty of an authentic dwelling from the Baroque and Rococó periods, with its perfectly preserved furniture, paintings, tapestries and decor. Despite the various remodelling operations that have taken place at the palace throughout its history, it is a fantastically well-preserved site where it won’t take the visitor much effort to imagine how the wealthy Valencian classes lived back then.
The Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas also houses the museum dedicated to the Valencian ceramic industry: the National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts (Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias). This display houses the largest national collection of ceramics from the eighth century through to the contemporary period, with pieces by Picasso and others from the Silk Road.
You can also visit an interesting, unique exhibition of carriages and coaches that are like something straight out of a fairy tale. Just as spectacular as the palace itself, or even more so, they are an example of Rococó beauty that cannot be admired anywhere else in the city.
